          Stop A Dog From Digging

There are a few reasons why dogs dig.  One, because they're bored, two, because they want to keep cool, and three, they're just diggers.  Following are a few suggestions for curing a digging dog

          ●  Because they're bored.  Because dogs are active, their

energy needs to be channeled into another direction.

Set aside some time each day to play with your dog.

Fetching a ball or frisbee.  Taking walks in the morning

or evening.  If you are going on a short trip to the store,

take him along.  Stop on the way back at McDonalds.

Get yourself a Big Mac and your dog a plain burger.  If

you are able to do so, have two dogs.  They keep each

              other company and occupied.

          ●  Because they want to keep cool.  Because a dog is

covered with fur, they will dig a hole in the hot season to

lay in.  The earth underneath is cool.  If he is an outside

dog, try to find a spot in the shade underneath a bush

where you could dig him a spot and where it

wouldn't ruin the look of your yard.  Train him to lay

              there.

          ●  Because they're just diggers.  Here's a few things you

can try for the dog that just wants to dig.  Try making

him a sand box and bury some of his toys.  When you

catch him digging, take him to the sand box and ruffle

the sand around a little bit.  Hopefully, he'll get the idea.

Praise him when he digs in the sand box.

If this fails, try burying balloons in the holes and cover

them with dirt.  When the dog starts digging there, he

will pop the balloons and be alarmed at the noise.  Or

try squirting water at him when you catch him digging.

Be consistent with this and eventually he will get the

idea that he's going to have to change his behavior.

If they are digging underneath fences, bury a layer of

chicken wire all around the fence.  Dogs do not like the

feel of the wire.  Another alternative is the electronic

fence dog training collar.  These are quite effective and

can even replace the traditional fence.
